When I decided to do a current event article on my country, Panama, I had to find a number of articles and read them before deciding on one. This helped me to learn about the government and every day life of people in Panama. I decided to write about a deadly sickness in Panama called Dengue fever. The more severe type of this sickness is called Hemorrhagic Dengue. Some say that this will become an epidemic, like infectious disease specialist and researcher Dr. Xavier Saez-Llorens. There have already been 1196 cases of Dengue this year, including several cases of Hemorrhagic Dengue.

Panama

Hi, my name is Aleta Estrella Ferraz Zalvidar and I come from Panama. People in Panama eat similar foods to the rest of Latin America, but our food is usually not very spicy. We eat a lot of seafood and corn dishes, and fresh fruit. We usually cook our food in oil. A very popular dish in Panama is ceviche, which is raw seafood marinated in lemon or lime juice. Lots of different spices and seasonings can be used, such as cilantro, garlic, peppers, or onions. Also, it often has tomatoes in it. Ceviche can be served with corn chips or crackers, or in pastry shells.

Panama's government is a representative democracy, which means the citizens vote to elect the government. The executive branch is the president and vice president. The legislative branch is the National Assembly, which has 74 members. The judicial branch is the Supreme Court. The political parties in Panama are the Panamenista, Democratic Change, National Liberal Republican Movement, Democratic Revolutionary, and Patriotic Union parties.
There are 9 provinces and 5 territories in Panama. Anyone 18 or older can vote. The president, vice president, and Assembly members are elected for 5 year terms, and the Supreme Court judges are appointed for 10 year terms. Panama's independence day was November 3, 1903. Panama has a constitution, which was originally enacted in 1972, and reformed in 2004.

The Republic of Panama is the southernmost country in Central America. The official language is Spanish, and the money we use is called Balboas and Dollars. At the narrowest part of Panama, it is only 80 km (about 50 mi) across from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast. This makes it the only place in the world where you can see the sun rise in the Pacific and set in the Atlantic. The beautiful country of Panama has over 10000 different species of plants, and more birds than the US and Canada combined. In 1914 the United States finished building the Panama Canal, which is 52 miles long. This is a picture of the Panama Canal.
